The Magnolia is definitely the aristocrat of the spring garden, there are few sights more spectacular than a mature Magnolia in full bloom.

Although traditionally quite demanding in their requirement for space and situation, there are however some beautiful hybrid varieties available, which are ideally suited to a smaller garden.

Some species require a certain amount of patience as you need to wait for them to mature enough to flower (although some will be free-flowering from a relatively young age) but almost all Magnolias are well worth the trouble.

The Magnolia has fleshy roots which are easily damaged when transplanting, for best results carefully plant out of a pot in late spring into a deeply worked, humus rich soil that doesn’t dry out in summer. Be sure to check the specific requirements of the variety you select, as some Magnolias prefer acid or neutral soil, but most will tolerate any soil as long as it is humus rich. No Magnolia likes a strong, cold wind so it is essential to plant in a spot which is at least sheltered from the north and east, and definitely not in a frost pocket!

Mulching in spring is important in order to conserve moisture and keep the roots cool – leaf mould or composted bark are ideal. The Magnolia requires minimal pruning, so be sure to allow plenty of space for it to expand sideways!
